Why we prune by hand in January

Every winter each vine at Calder Ridge is pruned by hand, about 14,000 of them (sample). We keep two canes for next year’s fruit and cut the rest away.
Pruning decides how big the crop will be and where the bunches will hang, so it is the first decision of the next vintage.
Want to try it? Our pruning workshop on the oldest Riesling rows takes place on the last Saturday in January. Book a place from the visit page.
