Brewed and poured on Halden Street
Four core beers and a changing list of specials, straight from the tanks behind the bar. Bottles and cans to take home from the shop by the door.
Since 2014 (sample)
Halden Street Brewery (sample) brews in an old tram depot: the tanks are at the back, the taproom is at the front and you can see one from the other. Everything on the bar was brewed within twenty metres of your glass.
We make four beers all year and one or two specials a month, and we sell them nowhere else but here and in a handful of local bars.
Beer is at its best the day it leaves the tank. In the taproom it travels a few metres of pipe, not a few hundred miles of road.

A ten-barrel brewhouse, four fermenters and two brewers. Small batches mean the beer on the bar is never more than a few weeks old.
Pale and crystal malts from a maltings forty miles away (sample).
Added by hand in the kettle and again in the tank.
Lagers rest six weeks in the cold before they reach the bar.
No contract brewing: every beer is made here, by us.
Mara and Tom (sample) started brewing in a garage, sold their first keg to the bar across the road and took the lease on the old depot a year later. The tram rails still run under the taproom floor.
Good beer needs a good room to drink it in.
We still brew every batch ourselves and still pour it at the bar on Saturdays. Come and say hello.

Cold, slow and patient: what happens in the lager cellar before Night Shift reaches the bar (sample).

An hour in the brewhouse with a brewer, then a flight of four. What to expect and what to wear (sample).
We came for the tour, stayed for a second flight and went home with a case of Night Shift. The brewer pouring our beer was the one who made it.
