For serious injuries and sudden illness that cannot wait. The emergency department has its own entrance on Riverside Road, 50 metres past the main doors.
In a life-threatening emergency, call 911. Chest pain, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding, or someone who cannot breathe or will not wake.

Emergency department
Broken bones, deep cuts, burns, sudden severe pain, a high fever in a baby.
Urgent care, level G
Sprains, small cuts, earache, infections. Daily 8:00–22:00 (sample).
Your own doctor
Problems that have lasted a while, repeat prescriptions, test results.
What happens when you arrive
The emergency department sees the most urgent patients first. Waiting times change through the day and night.
Arrive and register
Use the Riverside Road entrance and give your details at the desk. Ambulances arrive at the same entrance.
Triage
A nurse checks you within a short time of arriving and decides how urgently you need to be seen.
Waiting
People are seen in order of need, not in order of arrival. Tell the desk if you feel worse while you wait.
Treatment
A doctor or nurse practitioner examines you; you may have tests or scans.
Home or a ward
Most people go home the same day with advice and a letter for their doctor. Some stay on a ward.
