The route to Member

Most surveyors join as an Associate and become a Member two to three years later. Here is the whole route.

1

Join as an Associate

Apply with your degree or apprenticeship certificate and the names of two referees.

2

Log two years of practice

Keep a diary of the work you do and 20 CPD hours a year, signed off by a supervisor.

3

Pass the professional review

Send in your diary and a case study, then talk them through with two Fellows for an hour.

4

Be elected a Member

Council confirms new Members at its next monthly meeting. You may then use the letters MHS.

Check a surveyor

Everyone on the register is a current member, has met the CPD requirement and follows our code of conduct. Ask us to confirm a name before you instruct a surveyor.

What membership includes

Membership is more than letters after your name. It is the people you call when a job is unusual.

Questions about joining

If you are still studying, Student. If you are qualified and working, Associate. Surveyors who already hold full membership of another body may apply straight to Member; we assess each case.

One hour of learning that is relevant to your work. Events, courses and webinars are structured hours; reading, research and mentoring are self-directed. Keep a note of what you learned.

We remind you in October. If the year closes short, you have three months to catch up before your entry is taken off the public register.

Yes, in ten monthly payments from February (example terms). Members on parental leave or out of work pay a reduced fee.
