Six clauses every member signs up to, and what to do if a member falls short.
The code, clause by clause
Every member agrees to the code when they join and again each year with their CPD record (sample).
1
Act with integrity
Give honest advice, even when it is not what the client hoped to hear.
2
Work within your competence
Take on only the work you are qualified and insured to do, and say so when a job needs someone else.
3
Keep your knowledge current
Log the yearly CPD hours for your grade and keep the record for six years.
4
Declare conflicts
Tell the client in writing about any link to the seller, buyer, agent or builder.
5
Hold insurance
Keep professional indemnity cover that suits the work you take on.
6
Deal with complaints
Have a written complaints procedure and give it to every client.
If something went wrong
Raise it with the surveyor first. If that does not settle it within eight weeks, write to the register desk. The conduct panel looks at every complaint and publishes its decisions.
