How to apply
From your first application to election as a Member.
The route to Member
From Associate to Member in four steps; most people take two to three years.
1
Join as an Associate
Apply with your degree or apprenticeship certificate and the names of two referees.
2
Log two years of practice
Keep a diary of the work you do and 20 CPD hours a year, signed off by a supervisor.
3
Pass the professional review
Send in your diary and a case study, then talk them through with two Fellows for an hour.
4
Be elected a Member
Council confirms new Members at its next monthly meeting. You may then use the letters MHS.
What to send with your application
- Your degree or apprenticeship certificate
- Two referees, one of them a Member or Fellow
- A short note of the work you do now
- The joining fee of $40 (example prices)
We reply within three weeks (sample). If something is missing we tell you what, and keep your place.
The professional review
An hour with two Fellows, at the rooms or online. They read your diary and one case study beforehand and ask how you reached your conclusions. It is a conversation about real jobs, not an exam.
- Reviews run in March, June and October (sample)
- Your supervisor may sit in
- If it is not a pass yet, you hear what to work on and may come back in six months
