FAQs
Real or imitation, grades, viewings, restringing and buying from a distance.
Questions we are asked
If yours is not here, ask at the counter or send us a message.
How can I tell a real pearl from an imitation?
Rub it gently against the edge of your front tooth: a real pearl feels slightly gritty, an imitation smooth. Better still, bring it in and we look at it with you, free.
What do AAA, AA and A mean?
Our grade for lustre and surface together. AAA pearls reflect like a mirror and are nearly clean; A pearls glow softly and show small marks. The type and size matter as much as the grade.
Do I need to book a viewing?
No, you can walk in. Book if you want particular pieces laid out, or for a quiet half hour on a Saturday.
Can you restring a necklace I bought elsewhere?
Yes. We restring any strand on silk with a knot between every pearl, usually in about a week (sample).
Can I buy online?
Not yet. Ask about a piece and we set it aside for three days, or post it insured once it is paid for.
Are the pearls dyed or treated?
Every grading line says so if a pearl is treated. Our Tahitian pearls are never dyed; some freshwater pastels are, and they are marked.
Book a private viewing
Half an hour at the counter with the pieces you want to see, laid out on a white card under daylight lamps. Free, and there is no need to buy.
