Akoya or freshwater? How to tell them apart

Side by side in a case, a white Akoya strand and a white freshwater strand can look almost the same (sample note).

Look at the reflection first: Akoya pearls show sharp, mirror-like reflections, freshwater pearls a softer glow. Then roll the strand: Akoya pearls are rounder and more even in size.

Freshwater pearls are solid nacre and very hard-wearing, and they cost a fraction of the price. For a first strand worn every day, they are often the better choice.
