Root canal treatment
When the nerve inside a tooth is inflamed or infected, cleaning out the canals can save the tooth.
What happens
One or two visits of 60 to 90 minutes. It feels much like having a filling.

Numbing
A local anaesthetic, and a thin rubber sheet over the tooth to keep it dry.

Opening the tooth
A small opening in the top of the tooth reaches the canals.

Cleaning the canals
The nerve is removed and the canals cleaned and shaped.

Sealing
The canals are filled and sealed, and the top closed with a filling.

A crown, often
Back teeth usually need a crown afterwards so they do not crack.
Afterwards
- The tooth may be tender to bite on for a few days
- Take the painkiller you normally use, as the pack says
- Call us if swelling starts or the pain grows
