Sowing next year’s salad in October

It feels backwards, but the first salad leaves of spring are sown now (sample).

Hardy lettuces and winter purslane go into trays this week and out into the no-dig beds under fleece next month. They sit quietly through the winter and start growing again in February.

By March they fill the first veg boxes of the year, weeks before anything in the open field.
