How resizing works
1
We size your finger
With steel gauges at the counter, and check the ring’s current size on the mandrel.
2
Cut or stretch
Up one size we can often stretch a plain band; more than that, we cut it and add or remove metal of the same fineness.
3
Solder and true
The join is soldered, the ring hammered round and filed so you cannot find the seam.
4
Polish and check
Stones and claws are checked, the ring is polished and the maker’s marks are kept intact.
Good to know
- Rings set with stones all the way round cannot be resized; ask about an exchange
- Platinum and white gold take a few days longer
- Engraving inside the band moves with it, but may need re-cutting
Made at the bench behind the counter
Two jewellers work in the room behind the shop (sample). A plain band takes about a day; a signet ring with an engraved face, a week.
1
Cut
Silver and gold come to us as sheet and wire, mostly recycled (sample). Every band starts as a length sawn to your size.
2
Shape and solder
Bent round on the mandrel, the join soldered with a torch, then hammered true.
3
File and fit
Filed and sanded inside and out, stones set, the size checked again on the gauge.
4
Mark
We strike our maker’s mark and the fineness. Heavier pieces go to the assay office to be hallmarked (sample).
5
Polish
Polished on the wheel, cleaned, checked under the loupe and laid on the tray.
Questions about the workshop
Can you repair something you did not make?
Yes, almost always. We look at it with you first and say if a repair is not worth the cost.
How long will it take?
Most resizing and chain repairs take five working days; re-tipping and re-setting stones up to two weeks (sample).
Is my piece insured while you have it?
It is covered by the shop’s insurance while it is on the premises, up to the value written on your ticket (sample).
Can you tell me what my ring is made of?
Bring it in. We read the marks with you under the loupe and, if there are none, can test the metal at the counter for free.
Is it in your size?
Tell us the piece and your ring size, or bring in a ring that fits. We reply within a working day and can hold a piece for you for 48 hours.
