Halden Crypto Desk (sample) is four editors in Springfield writing crypto news and explainers for people who do not work in crypto.
Plain reports, slowly checked
We started in 2021 after too many readers of a local paper lost savings to a giveaway scam. We write for them: people who hear about crypto from a friend, a headline or a strange email, and want the facts before they do anything.
Four editors and a group of specialist readers (sample)
Every story shows how many of its six checks are done
Take money from exchanges, token projects or wallet makers
Run sponsored stories, referral links or paid listings
Ask anyone for recovery words, passwords or payment
Crypto can lose most or all of its value quickly, and payments cannot be reversed. Nothing on this site is financial advice: we report what happened and explain how it works, never what to buy or sell.
How we are paid for
Readers pay for most of what we do. The rest comes from grants with no say over what we write.
Reader memberships
About two thirds of our budget (sample).
Journalism grants
From two foundations that fund local news (sample).
The weekly newsletter
Free; it carries no advertising.
What we refuse
Money from anyone we report on, and any crypto as payment.
The editors
Each editor’s disclosure says what crypto, if any, they hold. Nobody writes about something they hold.
