How to point your domain at a new host

Network cables plugged into a patch panel

When you move hosts, your domain needs to know about it. Two records do the work: the A record for the website and the MX record for email.

A day before the move, lower the TTL on both records to 300 seconds. That way, when you change them, the old answer disappears from other networks within five minutes instead of an hour.

On the day, change the A record to the new server’s address and the MX record to the new mail server. Check the website from your phone on mobile data, then raise the TTL again the next day.
