Reading a block explorer for the first time

A block explorer shows the public record of a blockchain in a web page (sample note).
Search an address and you see every transfer in and out of it. Search a block and you see when it was added, how many transfers it holds and which block came before it.
Everything there is public, which is why privacy on most chains is weaker than people think. An explorer is a reading tool; it never needs your keys.
