Pitch the tent once in the garden or the park before the trip, in daylight, without hurrying (sample note).

Pack a head torch where you can reach it, a mat under every sleeping bag and one warm layer more than you think you need.

Arrive with two hours of light left. Everything is easier when you can see the pegs.
