Write the question before you hire anyone

Most engagements that go wrong were aimed at the wrong question. “Review our strategy” is a topic; “Should we open in a second city by next spring?” is a question someone can answer.

Write it in one sentence. Name the decision it serves and the person who will make it. Add the date the answer is needed, usually the board meeting where the decision is due.

If the leadership team cannot agree on the sentence, that is the first finding. Spend a week on it before you spend ten on the analysis.
