No. 146: The night train to the coast

The view of fields at sunset through an old train window

I took the night train back from my sister’s this week, the first time in years (sample entry).

The berth is narrow and the blanket is thin, but you wake up just as the line runs along the estuary, with the light coming up over the mudflats. Breakfast is a paper cup of tea and a roll.

It cost less than a hotel and a day of driving, and I wrote six pages of the notebook between stations.
