How much space does a dining table need?

A table for six is usually 180 by 90 cm, but the room it needs is much bigger (sample guide).
Allow about 75 cm from the table edge to the wall to pull a chair out and sit down, and 90 cm where someone needs to walk behind a seated guest. For a 180 cm table that means a room of at least 3.3 by 2.4 metres.
Our Dining page draws a 4.0 by 3.4 metre room with a table for six to scale, so you can compare it with your own.
