Lights and wipers
The commonest MOT fail and the easiest to put right.
Check it yourself
Five minutes on the drive the week before the test.
- Walk round with the lights on: side, dipped, main beam and fog
- Ask someone to watch the brake lights and indicators
- Check the number plate lamp
- Run the wipers and washers; top up the bottle
What the tester checks
- Every lamp works and shows the right colour
- Headlamp aim on the beam setter
- Wipers clear the screen; washers reach it
- No damage over 10 mm in the driver's view
