Why every commission starts with three thumbnails

The first thing an art director sees from me is never a finished drawing. It is three thumbnails, each about the size of a stamp.
Each one takes a different way into the article or the story. Seeing them side by side makes the choice easy, and nobody has spent a day on the wrong idea.
Once one is chosen, the rough is drawn at full size with the colours marked.
