The two things we never leave for the next owner: what we measure, and when we replace.
What the tread numbers mean
Tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch in the main groove, at three points across each tire. The lowest reading goes on the sheet.
New tire
10/32 to 11/32
Plenty left
6/32 and up
Replace soon, worse in rain
4/32 to 5/32
We replace before sale
Below 4/32
Legal minimum in most states
2/32
The same pair of tires is fitted on an axle, so the numbers on one axle match.
Brakes
Pads and rotors are checked with the wheels off. Anything near its limit is replaced before the car is priced, and written on the back of the sheet.
Brake pads
New pads are about 10 to 12 mm
Replaced below 4 mm
Rotors
Replaced when scored or under minimum thickness
Brake fluid
Changed when it fails the test
Tested for water
Parking brake
Held on the hill on Mill Road
